Spiritual Apathy
What If You’re Just Not “Feeling It” Anymore? Dealing with Spiritual Apathy
There are seasons in the Christian walk that are fire. You’re excited to read your Bible, your prayers feel powerful, and worship makes you cry.
And then there are seasons where…
you feel nothing.
Your Bible collects dust on the nightstand.
Your prayers feel like they hit the ceiling.
You don’t want to go to church, and if you do, you’re distracted.
You know God is good, but you’re just not feeling it.
If you’re in a season of spiritual apathy, you are not alone.
Spiritual Apathy Is Part of the Journey
We don’t like to admit it, but nearly every believer goes through spiritually dry seasons.
King David, the man after God’s own heart, cried out: “Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” Psalm 10:1
Even the disciples had moments of doubt and confusion, standing next to Jesus Himself.
You aren’t a “bad Christian” because you’re in a dry season.
Feelings Don’t Equal Faith
Your feelings might be flat, but your faith isn’t dead.
“We live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
And we live by faith, not by feelings.
Feelings are fickle. They fluctuate with hormones, stress, circumstances, sleep, and even the weather. God is not moved by your feelings; He is moved by your faith.
Possible Causes of Spiritual Apathy
Spiritual apathy can happen for many reasons:
· Exhaustion or burnout
· Unconfessed sin weighing on your spirit
· Routine without heart connection
· Disappointment with God
· Neglecting spiritual disciplines
· Spiritual attack
· Depression or mental health challenges
It’s worth praying and journaling about what might be causing your current dryness.
What You Can Do When You’re Not Feeling It
1. Keep Showing Up
Open your Bible even if it feels dry. Pray, even if it feels empty. Go to church, even if you’re distracted.
2. Be Honest with God
Tell Him exactly how you feel: numb, bored, disappointed, tired. He can handle it.
3. Change It Up
Try a new Bible reading plan, a different translation, or a Christian podcast. Go for a prayer walk.
4. Confess & Repent if Needed
If unconfessed sin is hardening your heart, bring it to God and receive His forgiveness.
5. Rest
Sometimes your soul needs rest, not more hustle.
6. Invite the Holy Spirit
Ask Him to rekindle your desire for God.
Trust That This Season Won’t Last Forever
Spiritual apathy is a season, not a sentence. God hasn’t moved away from you, and He hasn’t given up on you. He’s still working, even when you don’t feel it.
“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James 4:8
A Prayer for Spiritual Apathy
Lord, I feel numb, and I’m not feeling close to You right now. Please rekindle my desire for You. Help me to seek You, even when it’s hard, and meet me in this place of dryness. Thank You for loving me, even when my feelings are flat. Amen.
You’re Not Alone
If you’re in a spiritually dry season, it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human, and you’re on a faith journey that includes hills and valleys.
Don’t quit. Don’t walk away. Keep showing up, one small step at a time, and trust that God is still holding you close, even when you can’t feel Him.
